Avoid these 5 Online Dating Photo Mistakes and Level up Your Matches
As a Dating Coach for over a decade and grateful to be recently named one of the top 10 Online Dating Coaches by DatingAdvice.com, I know the impact bad photos can make on your dating profile. You only have a few seconds to make a first impression. If you aren’t having luck with online dating apps, have you considered that your online dating photos might be turning potential matches away?
Besides the importance of what is written on your dating bio, it is also crucial to present yourself in the best possible light with your online dating profile photos. In this post, we’ll discuss the five most common online dating photo mistakes to avoid so you can level up and get more matches!
Blurry or Low-Quality Photos:
It might sound obvious, but blurry, unclear, or low-quality photos are one of the biggest turn-offs on online dating apps. Potential matches want to see the real you, so make sure your pictures are high-quality, crisp, and in focus. Take photos in good lighting and use a camera that produces sharp images. If your phone camera isn’t cutting it, invest in a good-quality camera or borrow one from a friend.
Consider hiring a professional photographer to help you too! But remember, you don’t want all your photos to be filtered and perfect. You need to showcase the real you, so having more real-life everyday photos of you doing something you love, like hiking, dancing, or hanging out at your favorite ballgame is important.
Group Shots:
While it’s nice to show that you have friends and a social life, group shots as your main profile picture don’t tell potential matches who you are. It drowns you out, and sometimes it is even hard to see who the profile actually belongs to, especially if you and your friends look very similar. Avoid group shots as your primary photo too.
A dating profile is about specifically highlighting you. All the attention should go to you! This way, potential matches know who they’re swiping on. Multiple group shots, particularly from the same event, are also a NO-NO. The photos can leave others confused and feel uninspired. If you want to increase your matches, here’s a tip: include a full-body shot in your dating profile. This type of photo has been shown to increase matches in recent online dating studies!

Too Many Selfies:
Avoid having only selfies as your online dating profile pictures. One maybe okay. While selfies might be the easiest option, too many of them can give off the impression that you might be really into yourself and come off as narcissistic. Modern-day phones allow you to set timers on your phone so that you can have it take photos for you.
Also, invest in a tripod and take different angles where you aren’t directly looking at the camera. It’s important to showcase a range of photos that show who you are and what you enjoy. Ask a friend to capture more candid shots of you laughing or walking through a picturesque place. The more visual, the better!
Not Considering Your Context:
What you wear, where you are, and what you’re doing in your dating profile photos can speak volumes to potential matches. It’s essential to consider the context of your photos and what impression they might give off. Show your personality in your photos; if you are a jeans kind of person but can dress up for a night out in the town, showcase those outfits so we, the reader, can better understand who you are.
Make sure your photos are consistent with who you are and what you’re looking for in a partner. So, if you are looking for something more serious, avoid risque photos. Find photos that highlight your values. For instance, if you’re looking for someone who values fitness and health, consider taking photos at the gym or during a hike.
Using Old Photos:
Using old photos might seem harmless, but they can leave potential matches feeling deceived and untrusting. Make sure you’re using current photos that resemble what you look like today. My recommendation is not to use photos that are no more than a year old.
If you don’t have any, its time you call out your friends to help you capture your best sides! Don’t forget to take at least five photos for your profile; that is the minimum I recommend. It’s better to present the real you to potential matches, so you build trust and avoid any uncomfortable conversations or disappointments later on.
Your online dating photos are your chance to make a lasting impression on potential matches. By avoiding these common online dating photo mistakes, you’re more likely to attract the right person who will appreciate you for who you are.
