From being the first to say “I love you” to sharing your emotional truth, being vulnerable in any relationship takes a lot of courage. While even just the thought of this may sound truly frightening, it is only through expressing your deepest feelings and needs aka being vulnerable that true intimacy can be achieved.
So how does someone that struggles with opening up and sharing their inner thoughts learn to be vulnerable? One learns vulnerability by treating being as vulnerable as a practice. By being intentional and practicing vulnerability, being vulnerable will become a healthy habit over time. In my Vietnamese culture, vulnerability is widely seen as a weakness, which pretty much-cemented opening up as one of my major life struggles. However, putting work in and learning to speak from the heart and be vulnerable, has also led to some of my greatest rewards in life. It is through being vulnerable that I have achieved stronger connections in all of my relationships – from friendships to my marriage and even at work.
