Is This Person Worth It? 10 Signs You’re Wasting Your Time in Dating

Have you ever been three months into dating someone and had a sinking feeling that something just isn’t right?

Nothing dramatic happened. But things feel one-sided. You keep showing up, easygoing, hoping not to rock the boat. And one question keeps popping into your head: Is this person worth investing in, or am I just wasting my time?

I’ve asked myself that more than once. Here’s what nobody told me back then: I wasn’t bad at dating. You could say I had a “bad picker.” But really, I kept attracting the same type of guy because I was so good at keeping everyone else comfortable. I was raised on “children should be seen and not heard.” To be a good kid, I had to be the low-maintenance one. The girl who didn’t make waves.

When you’re raised like that, you don’t walk into dating looking for red flags. You walk in looking for ways to be enough. To be chosen. So the signs you’re wasting your time don’t look like warnings. They look like your next goal to chase.

If that’s you, I see you. Let’s talk about the signs you’ve been trained to miss, and how to start being the chooser.

10 Signs You’re Wasting Your Time

1. You’re always the one adjusting

You move your Saturday plans. Your gym time moves to accommodate. And your friend’s birthday dinner? You leave early. Their schedule never moves an inch.

People pleasers call this “being flexible.” I call it shrinking. Compromise goes both ways. If you’re the only one adjusting your life, you’re not in a partnership. You’re slowly disappearing, and that’s the quickest way to lose yourself in a relationship.

2. They disappear when you need them

When they had a bad day, you were on the phone until midnight and heard every single emotion they had to process. When you got hard news, you got a “that sucks” text and a thumbs-up. No follow-up, no “How are you doing?” Just a short, cold answer.

I remember going through a really rough stretch at work. At that time, I really needed support, so I called the man I was dating and asked if he could talk, because my feelings were so hurt. He responded, “I don’t do feelings,” and made some exaggerated excuse to get off the phone. My heart sank, and I felt so alone. Needless to say, that relationship ended for good reason.

In a healthy relationship, both people get to fall apart sometimes. If only one of you is allowed to have needs, you already know whose needs those are.

3. You’re keeping score, and you’re losing

They remember the one time they picked you up from the airport. They’ll bring it up for years. Meanwhile, the dinners you cooked, the errands you ran, the pep talks you gave? Those are just “what you do.”

You start to feel taken advantage of, and resentment builds because you feel so underappreciated.

Takers keep score, but only when it makes them look good. And if you mention the imbalance, suddenly you’re the one keeping score.

4. Your good news makes them weird

You share a win, like getting praised at work, and instead of cheering you on, they change the subject. Or even worse, they minimize your excitement. Or top it with a story about themselves.

Here’s the thing. The right person will be your loudest cheerleader. My husband Kevin celebrates my wins like they’re his own. When I first started as a dating coach over a decade ago, I remember sharing the news of my first client who got engaged! He was over-the-top excited for them and for me!

That’s what it should feel like. If you have to dim your light so they feel bright, that’s your answer.

5. It’s always somehow your fault

You bring up something that hurt you. There’s no acknowledgment. There’s no “I’m sorry.” Then ten minutes later, they flip it on you. You find yourself full of guilt, apologizing and comforting them. The kicker? You walk away wondering if you’re too much. Too sensitive.

People pleasers are wired to smooth things over, so we fold fast. But accountability is a form of love. Someone who cares about you can say “I’m sorry, I’ll do better” and then actually do better.

Sometimes red flags are easy to miss… these are the most common toxic ones. Watch below.

6. Your generosity has become their expectation

You’re the one who makes the most effort. From being the first to reach out to planning every little detail. And the most devastating part? There’s no thank you, just an expectation that you’ll keep going.

I’ll say it plainly: takers can spot a giver from across a crowded bar. They’re drawn to us because we make their lives easier. I’m sorry to say this… but that’s not a compliment. That’s someone using us. And it’s a big sign that we need to prioritize ourselves first. That’s not selfish. That’s self-respect.

7. You feel drained, not lifted

This is the big one to pay attention to. After spending time with them, do you feel energized and calm? Or tired, anxious, and a little less like yourself? If you notice you’re feeling drained, you might be dating an emotional vampire.

I want you to start paying attention to your nervous system. Why? Because your body knows the truth even when your mind is making excuses for the relationship. That knot in your stomach on the drive home is data. Trust it, and know that it’s a sign they don’t make you feel emotionally safe.

8. You’ve stopped asking for things

It’s not that they say no. It’s that you’ve quietly given up. Because asking leads to a sigh, an eye roll, or a fight that causes too much emotional drama to be worth it.

This one is sneaky for people pleasers, because it feels like you’re being easygoing. But going silent about your needs isn’t being low maintenance. It’s self-abandonment. My ex was someone who overpromised and never delivered. I remember asking him to help pack our apartment for a move while I was away at a work conference. When I came home, barely anything was done. I felt completely defeated, hit by a wave of disappointment. I couldn’t rely on him.

Someone who is there for you will follow through on their promises. They want to help you, just as you would do for them. You can rely on them. And most importantly, your requests aren’t a burden.

9. You’re in love with their potential

You’re not dating who they are. Instead, you’re dating who they’ll be once they get the new job, heal from their ex, or “figure things out.”

Fixers fall hard for potential. It gives us a role to play. If we just love them enough, support them enough, wait long enough… they’ll become the person we see.

Here’s the hard truth: you can’t build a relationship with a future version of someone. Date the person in front of you. If who they are today isn’t enough, then you have to learn to say NO to what you don’t want, to make room for what you DO want.

10. Breadcrumbs feel like excitement

Ugh… I hated tolerating this. Because I always saw the best in people, I missed this red flag. You know, three days of silence causing you so much anxiety, and then out of nowhere, right when you’re about to be over them, you get one sweet text. “Thinking about you.” And suddenly your whole week is golden again.

When you’re starving for consistency, the breadcrumbs feel exciting. The problem is that we confuse anxiety with excitement. That rush isn’t chemistry. It’s relief. And takers learn quickly that a little attention keeps you hanging on.

A person who’s serious about you doesn’t make you wait and wonder. They show up. Regularly. Without you having to earn it.

Why People Pleasers Miss These Signs

If you read that list and thought “okay, but I knew some of that,” you’re not alone. Most of my clients know. They just can’t act on it yet.

Here’s why. When you grow up keeping the peace, your nervous system learns that other people’s comfort equals your safety. So when someone takes too much, your first move isn’t “this isn’t fair.” It’s “what can I do to make this better?”

That’s how the excuse list gets written. That’s how three months becomes three years.

Before I met Kevin, I was a struggling single who felt pretty hopeless about love. I told myself I needed to be perfect to be loved. From childhood into adulthood, I was the overachiever, even when it came to earning love. For many devastating years, that didn’t work for me. It wasn’t until I got conscious about choosing, not chasing, that everything changed. That’s where Conscious Dating came from.

The truth is, people pleasers don’t have bad picking skills. We have a blind spot. And you can’t fix a blind spot by trying harder. You fix it with boundaries.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

If you saw yourself in this article, take a breath. Seeing it doesn’t make you foolish. It makes you aware. And awareness is where every change starts.

You’re not asking for too much when you want reciprocity, respect, and real care. That’s the bare minimum.

But I know how hard it is to set boundaries when your whole life taught you not to. That’s exactly what I help my clients with. Together we figure out which boundaries you need, how to hold them without guilt, and how to spot a taker before you’ve invested months of your heart.

Ready to stop wasting your time? Book your Free Relationship Readiness Review with me here. We’ll look at your patterns and map out the boundaries that will help you choose better, starting now.

You deserve someone who gives as much as you do.

Comment TRAP and I’ll send you my FREE ebook📖on how to break bad dating patterns and start choosing an emotionally healthy partner

The #1 sign of an emotionally mature partner 💛

I’ll be honest, I used to think attraction started from charm, big promises, grand gestures.  I thought that’s what a great partner looked like. It wasn’t. 🙋‍♀️

Here’s the real sign that tells you so much about how someone will love you.
