Why We Self-Sabotage Love and How to Break the Cycle

Let’s talk about something I see all the time with the singles I work with. And honestly? Something I lived for years myself.

You say you want love. You mean it. You’re dating, you’re putting yourself out there, and then someone great comes along. They’re kind. They’re consistent. They actually show up.

And suddenly, something in you starts looking for the exit.

Maybe you lose interest out of nowhere. Maybe you pick a fight right when things are going well. Maybe you keep choosing people who can’t fully show up, because deep down, that means you never have to either.

If you’re nodding along right now, I want you to hear this first: you are not broken. You’re not too much, and you’re not “bad at relationships.” You’re protecting yourself in the way you once needed to. That’s what self-sabotage really is.

In my work as a dating coach, I see it show up in four main ways. Let’s walk through them, and then I’ll show you how to actually stop.

It Might Be Emotional Unavailability

Here’s the thing about emotional unavailability: most people who have it have no idea. Because on the outside, you look totally open. You’re fun on a date. You’re engaged. You ask good questions.

But the minute things get deeper, the minute someone wants more of you, a door quietly closes.

You stay busy so there’s never really time to connect. You keep things light. You find yourself drawn to people who are a little out of reach, because a relationship that never fully lands can never fully hurt you.

I want to be really clear here. Emotional unavailability is not a sign that you don’t care. It’s armor. At some point, opening your heart led to disappointment or rejection, and keeping your distance became the way you stayed in control.

The problem? That same wall that keeps the pain out keeps love out too.

Attachment Wounds Running the Show

Long before your first date, you learned what love felt like. You learned it from how safe, seen, and comforted you felt as a kid. And that early blueprint? It follows you right into your adult relationships.

If you lean anxious, you might find yourself rereading texts, needing reassurance, or testing someone to see if they’ll stay. Underneath it all is the fear: they’re going to leave.

If you lean avoidant, you might crave space the second things get close. Suddenly you notice every little flaw. You end it before it gets “too serious.” Underneath that is the fear: if I need someone, I’ll get hurt.

And some of us swing back and forth between the two. We want closeness, then panic when we get it. Pull them in, push them away.

I’ve been there. And here’s what I want you to know: your attachment style is not a life sentence. It was a survival strategy your younger self came up with. With awareness and support, you can learn to feel secure in love. I’ve watched so many of my clients do it.

Here are 20 self-sabotaging behaviors that ruin love. Watch below!

A Nervous System Is Stuck on High Alert

This one is so important, and it’s the piece most people miss.

Sometimes self-sabotage isn’t a decision you make. It’s your body reacting before your mind even catches up. If you grew up with chaos, conflict, or never quite knowing what you were going to get, your nervous system learned to stay on guard. Always scanning. Always bracing.

So in dating, it looks like feeling on edge when they don’t text back. Reading rejection into a totally neutral moment. Feeling restless when things are calm.

And here’s the big one: mistaking anxiety for chemistry.

When your body is used to chaos, the steady, emotionally safe person can feel flat. Meanwhile, the hot-and-cold one who keeps you guessing feels electric. But that spark? A lot of the time, it’s just your nervous system recognizing what’s familiar. Not what’s good for you.

This is exactly why you can’t just think your way out of self-sabotage. Your body has to learn, over and over again, that calm and connection are safe.

Letting Anyone Really See You Feels Scary

Real intimacy means being seen and being vulnerable. And being seen means taking the risk that someone won’t like what they find.

For so many of us, that risk feels like too much. So we show up as the polished version. The easygoing, low-maintenance, “I’m totally fine” version. And we tuck away the parts that feel messy or needy.

Maybe you’ve caught yourself thinking, I don’t want to be too much. Or, I’ll tell them how I feel once I know they feel the same way. Or, It’s just easier to handle this on my own.

Here’s the hard truth. Someone can only love the version of you that you let them meet. When you keep your needs and feelings hidden, the relationship stays on the surface. Then it feels empty, and you take that as proof that love just doesn’t work for you.

And around and around the cycle goes.

Vulnerability doesn’t mean spilling your whole life story on the first date. It means letting the right person, at the right pace, see what’s real.

How to Actually Stop Self-Sabotaging

Okay, here’s what I really need you to take in: just knowing your patterns isn’t going to change them. But knowing them is where everything starts. You can’t change what you can’t see.

Step one: Catch yourself in the moment. When you feel that pull to go quiet, start something, or suddenly zero in on what’s wrong with them, stop. Take a breath. Get curious before you react. And ask yourself: Is this about what’s actually happening right now? Or is this an old story playing out again?

Step two: Do the inner work. Self-sabotage grows out of limiting beliefs, and those beliefs go deep. This is where therapy, coaching, journaling, and nervous system work come in. These are the tools that help you rewrite the story you’ve been telling yourself about love.

And I’ll be honest with you, it takes time. This isn’t something you fix over a weekend. It’s showing up for yourself consistently, week after week, month after month, until the new way becomes your normal. That’s why I work with my singles for at least six months. Patterns that took a lifetime to build need real time to shift.

Step three: Get comfortable with the discomfort of healthy love. If you’ve never had a truly healthy relationship, it’s going to feel weird at first. Consistency might feel boring. Kindness might feel suspicious. Peace might feel like you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

That doesn’t mean something’s wrong. It means you’re somewhere new. Stay anyway. Breathe through it. Let it become familiar.

Step four: Get honest about your patterns, with compassion. Not shame. Compassion. You self-sabotage because, at some point, it protected you. So thank that part of you for keeping you safe. Then gently let it know: I’ve got this now. I can handle love. I’m safe.

I want to leave you with this. Self-sabotaging doesn’t mean you’re meant to be alone. It doesn’t mean love isn’t for you. It means you’ve been carrying wounds that were never yours to carry in the first place.

The biggest shift I ever made, and the one I’ve watched change the lives of so many people I’ve worked with, was learning to see myself as worthy of love before I was in it. Not because someone chose me. Not because a relationship made me feel good. But because I did the work to believe it from the inside out.

You can do that too. It’s not easy. But it is absolutely possible.

If you’re tired of getting in your own way and you’re ready to finally understand what’s been holding you back in love, I’d love to help. Book a Relationship Readiness Review with me here. We’ll spend 30 minutes diving into where you are right now, what’s keeping you stuck, and exactly what steps will move you toward the love you deserve.

With love, Amie

The #1 sign of an emotionally mature partner 💛

I’ll be honest, I used to think attraction started from charm, big promises, grand gestures.  I thought that’s what a great partner looked like. It wasn’t. 🙋‍♀️

Here’s the real sign that tells you so much about how someone will love you.

In this interview with VICE I share the 4 questions I believe every person should ask themselves before getting married. Swipe 👈 to read the article!

One of them is about something most couples never talk about until it’s too late. Another has to do with what your body is already telling you about your relationship. 👀

Thank you to Sammi Caramela and VICE for helping share this conversation. If you’re engaged, thinking about it, or just curious whether you’re with your person, this one’s for you.
